Warehome | We are hiring!

Over the last few years, we have been growing to meet the demand of new projects. Maybe you could be the new talent to help us expand further?

What is Warehome?

We focus on designing sustainably inclined homes for private clients. We take on projects that are exciting, challenging and for people who really care about the end result. To date, this has varied from infill and backfill urban developments through to green belt, conservation area and Paragraph 80 (previously Para. 55 and then Para. 79) homes.

We deep dive into each project to thoroughly understand the client drivers. Matching the materials and flow with the personality and lifestyle of the client is key, whilst also looking to push the envelope from an architectural and design perspective. We offer the support for clients from conception through to delivery, and are able to design every element along the way. This includes the overall scheme and the structure, to the kitchen and cabinetry, right down to the switches.

We use the latest design and manufacturing techniques to improve coordination throughout the design and build process. This approach helps to avoid complications once on site. The result is a more controlled and less stressful process for all.

What we are looking for:

After 5 years of organic growth and development, we are looking for driven and genuinely passionate designers from either an architectural design or engineering background looking to fit into our multidisciplinary architectural practice. As our projects need to balance client requirements, sustainable drivers and real-world constraints, the successful applicants would need to have shown an appreciation for application and validation as well as design flair and innovative thinking. We want individuals who, like us, know how to switch off and throw themselves into a hobby or interest - yet never completely shut down, ignoring what makes design work so effortlessly across all of life’s touchpoints. People who can appreciate the mechanics, consideration and timing of a ski lift on the way up the mountain, and the freedom, flow and pure childlike exhilaration on the way back down.

A background and/or interest in architecture is a must. Part 1, 2 or 3 qualification, or equivalent design degree would certainly be a preference. But the biggest factor is the right attitude. We don’t always do things the same way as everyone else, nor do we want to. So, we are looking for people who are equally comfortable churning through the required paperwork and drafting, whilst also stepping into the unknown and trying something new.

We work in 3D - pretty much exclusively. Our clients like to live in 3D homes, so we start with a survey in 3D and keep it that way until the client gets the keys. We use a variety of software for different requirements but we don’t always use the ‘usual suspects’. So don’t feel you can’t apply if you don’t either. It is more important how and why you model the way you do now. (Anyone who can draw with a pencil can learn to use a pen. And your choice of medium can change based on the artwork.)

At times, the successful applicants will be client facing and contractor facing. They need to be able to manage their time, working as part of a team as well as when on their own. They are able to debate their view with respect and passion, yet willing and accepting of the final outcome when it doesn’t go their way, and still have the energy and drive to discuss the next item with the same effort.

As a small, energetic practice taking on unique projects that constantly challenge our thinking, we expect our team to transition between all aspects of the project. We are looking for people who want to engage and enhance projects across the full architectural spectrum.

 Design Challenge

Brief: Requirement for a bespoke retreat for a ‘client’ who is looking to spend long weekends staying on a remote parcel of land they own in the English countryside. They do not have a house there, or any other buildings, so this is to serve as their only space whilst away. There are no existing services, and the client is an environmentally conscious individual. The client is a writer and so they would like to get ‘lost’ in the environment whilst also being able to work comfortably.

Site specific details:
The site is on a gradual slope, with a total level change of 20m, and under the 300mm of top soil is clay. The site slopes to the South with the retreat to be placed at the top of the hill. There is a tree line and established hedge around all the boundaries. The site measures approximately 3 acres with the top boundary of the field being 125m long. The site is almost a perfect rectangle.

Design Requirements:
- One connection to the ground
- Sustainably minded material choices
- Consideration of all the standard comfort requirements
- Offsite construction consideration
- A unique design, unlike the available options on the market, but not to ‘stand out’ too much in its setting.
- The external footprint of the building is to be no more than 5m x 4m and 3m high.

Task:
Please present an initial concept to meet the above criteria. Please present all information in the appropriate way for discussing and presenting the concept to the client for initial review and feedback.

Timescale:
Deliverable to be completed and returned within 2 calendar weeks

Please include:

⁃ CV
⁃ Portfolio
⁃ Covering letter
⁃ Previous work experience
⁃ 'Design Challenge' submission.

We look forward to hearing from you soon!
